In the News: Chicago Students Journey from Dance Class to Ballroom Dance Floor

In a 2-part series, a reporter from ABC 7 Chicago followed a group of Chicago Public School students from their weekly dance classes at school all the way to a city-wide performance at the Chicago Cultural Center. The series cast a spotlight on Dancing with Class, a program that helps students develop social and emotional skills (SEL) through dance.

In part 1, ABC visits Edwards Elementary on the Southwest Side of Chicago to check out how a group of 5th graders feel about the experience when they are about half-way through the 10-week program. Students share a mix of emotions as they work hard to master the steps, and the supportive staff at Edwards chimes in with their views on the value of the program. In part 2, ABC visits the Chicago Public Schools city-wide Dance-Off, where teams from other schools across the city joined the students of Edwards Elementary. In this spirited event, students have the chance to dance alongside students from the other schools in celebration of the shared journey they have all taken through the program.
